HOW TO USE GAMIFICATION TO GET MOTIVATED?

(Gamification and Motivation)

Motivation 1.0

When I was a child, my mother often played a “reward” game with me. As long as I did a housework or got a praise from others, I could put a coin into the piggy bank.

My little piggy bank photoed by my mum in China.

When it reaches a certain level, it can be exchanged for rewards. For me at that time, getting COINS was my biggest motivation and goal. Sometimes I would do a lot of housework a day in order to get rewards faster. Even if tired also full of enthusiasm.

I enjoyed the game because I found the process was gratifying and the motivation was the reward.

Now I can cook and do housework, independence is very strong, probably because of my mother’s reward system to built my habit. (Thanks mum! ♥ )

A suspended city, Pray for Wuhan, China

By Irene Chen

In the fight against the disaster, there are always many ordinary people who stand up and become great civilian heroes because they are needed.

“I’m not a hero, I’m just needed,” netizens make this caption as the hottest topic on the Sina Weibo social media platform, as the Chinese version of Twitter, to honour the memory of the Doctor Wenliang Li. He was the first man trying to warn his colleague about the disease but has sacrificed in this emergency situation.

As a matter of fact, no one can predict how severe of both the challenges and the crises to all Chinese now.

When the holiday of the Spring Festival draws near, many special purchases are arranged to greet the coming festival, all Chinese people are busy buying necessities and preparing New Year foods, immersed in a festive atmosphere. However, the advent of a deadly virus upsets all the plans.

The new coronavirus, provisionally named Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (NCP) has infected 37,288 people and 813 deaths in China and 24 countries worldwide have confirmed cases so far, Chinese Health Bureau update online February 9.

“I am declaring a public health emergency of international concern over the global outbreak of novel coronavirus,” Ghebreyesus delivers the announcement on a news conference.

Doctor Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, as the Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO) defines the novel coronavirus constitutes “a global health emergency” which has “escalated into an unprecedented outbreak”.

During the declaration, he also encourages “international public health partners to act together now to limit the deadly disease spread across the globe,” says Ghebreyesus. “We must remember that these are people, not numbers.”

According to the first edition report of this novel coronavirus case, possibly the virus originated from Huanan seafood wholesale market, in Wuhan, Health Commission of Hubei Province published via Sina Weibo social media platform.

“This target market sells live and newly slaughtered wildlife animals privately, and of course, each animal can be the pathogen,” Chunliang Li says, of China Wildlife Conservation Association.

As a health expert and one of the members in the wildlife authority organisation, he has ordered immediately to close the market and ban to sale wild animals in the Hubei Province.

“The new coronavirus is a new strain that has not been identified in humans before, possibly originated from bats, and the hosts infected other wildlife animals, which also transmitted the virus to mammals, inevitably humans.”

Chinese and the authority government seem not to have been paid attention on the serious of this epidemic until the middle of January.

The death roll and number of confirmed cases continuously to grow, all of a sudden, outbreaking from Wuhan to be extending to all other parts of China.

“It has highly infectious power that can transmit human-to-human,” Nanshan Zhong says in an interview with state broadcaster CCTV.

Nanshan Zhong, who is the leader of China’s State Committee on Health and the most senior epidemiologist convinced for his responsibility in fighting SARS in 2003, states his findings of the NCP.

“It’s time to value this infection and isolate at home in the midst of the Spring festival is both the best detection and precaution.”

Following Dr. Zhong, Chinese citizens realize the power of this infection and Chinese government locks down the city through closing the public transport and rules that the biggest contribution all Chinese people can do at this difficult moment is to stay at home.

“I’ve never thought that I would wear the same pajamas all holiday,” says Judy Xu, as a citizen of Wuhan.

Her uncombed hair and the messy room shows that she has stayed at home for a period of time.

“Can you imagine I haven’t gone out for ten days! At the beginning of this year, I made my plan for this year. However, after this disease happened, I just want to be alive and stay at home.” She says in a disappointed tone.

Judy is only one example of all Chinese, especially in Wuhan. The city is frozen in emergency lockdown situation because of the virus infection.

“I will follow this rule and listen to Dr. Zhong, hoping our country can pull through the difficulties and go back as soon as possible to former routines.”

Wuhan, without the prosperity of the past, everyone stays at home to keep away from others, only can see supervisors and sanitation workers on the road .

However, the early lack of attention make the coronavirus results in a sharp increase in infection rates.

In the latest news of the confirmed case, a Chinese newborn has been verified with the novel coronavirus just 30 hours after birth, as the youngest case.

Chinese scientists and government are in a race against time and doing everything they can to control the outbreak in a high-speed level.

The Chinese scientists have the knowledge to conduct epidemiological investigations genetically and correctly identified the new germs in early January. Moreover, experts hold press conferences regularly to report the new discoveries and use the social media platform keep uploading the latest information to the up level as a strategy to relieve Chinese worried and anxious.

At the same time, Chines government gains the experience of SARS coronavirus in 2003 and orders the construction of two new makeshift hospital which have the ability to accommodate 1000 beds for quarantine. Chinese workers show the capacity to build the hospitals in only 10 days.

“I will donate all my money to do something and for nothing in return,” Mingliang Luo says, a worker joins in this project.

Because of continuous working long hours, Mr. Luo looks too tired that even cannot feel joyful after received his salary of full participation in the completion.

“I’m lack education and don’t understand these big theories, but at present my country is trapped,” he says. “Compare with the front-line medical workers, I am nothing worth mentioning.”

So, “Who are the heroes?”

These front-line medical doctors who save the patients from the disease are the heroes; These bosses who deliver the free meals and supplies to the supervisors and sanitation workers are the heroes; These ordinary citizens who just leave a hundred of face masks to the police and goes away in a hurry are the heroes; These unknown bottom-class people who donate all their savings for the country contribution are the heroes…

Indeed, there are lots of tiny examples of these ordinary people who tries to do kindness in its own way for this country. Because of needed, they become the genuine heroes to protect the society.

All Chinese are united now to fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak, also, Chinese scientists have some new findings and positive reports.

Common signals of the infection are fever, cough, difficult breathing and shortness of breath which can cause respiratory symptoms and pneumonia and the worst of death.

The latest finding shows that the virus not only can transmit through human contact, but also has the ability to combine with the air particulate matter then infect via respiratory system.

Chinese experts highlight that it is really important to wear face masks outdoors and wash hands regularly also properly. In addition, do more exercise to strengthen the immune system, have a good air flow and avoid going to crowed places are some good ways to help people stay away from catching any infections.

“Fortunately, the rate of the confirmed cases is decreasing in the recent days. The cure rate is much higher than the fatality rate. We have discovered a few medicines but need to test at first” Chinese scientists reports in the official newspaper People’s Daily.

At the center of what people believes, human is the leader of natural. However, when we are trying to challenge the natural, of tasting wildlife animals. The natural will warn us through the disease.

After Australian bushfire, Turkish earthquake, Chinese coronavirus and other disasters, it seems like the beginning of year 2020 is a bit hard. It is time to arouse attention of all human in the world to care about the nature, the issue of global warming and the earth where we live.

For Chinese, the first and simplest way to prevent such terrible infection diseases is say no to wildlife animals, stay away from their habitats .

At this stage, the scientists and doctors from all over the China hasten to the relief of Wuhan, to save lives and fight with the virus.

All Chinese should honor the sincere heroes, because of their bravery and dedication.

Love and hope will conquer the virus. For sure, Spring will come eventually.

Come on, Wuhan! Get well soon, China!

Always Be Learnig Through Social Media

I did not hesitate to choose Artificial Intelligence as my topic. In today’s society with rapid technological development, AI is applied in almost all fields. In this informative video, I mainly studied the positive and negative effects brought by AI of using some exapmles. Then discussed the anxiety even question whether AI will have threatening consequence. I want to use this video to help scholars who watched this, better understand its history, advantages and disadvantages of the current situation and carefully consider its future of AI.

To begin with it, I watched the video named “What is an informative video”. This made it clear to me that informative video purpose is to inform someone. We want to educate them on some new material. We want to provide them with history or context, give them a sense of why they’re learning this information now. After understanding the concept, I started to research some academic readings. I highly recommended the question and answer article named “What is Artificial Intelligence” for you, as a basic knowledge reserve. The author John McCarthy is one of the original scientists first coined and gave a definition of AI in 1956. Next, I wrote my plan in the Word document. After identified a few research directions and started filling in.

I use different colors to mark what I need to do. I read it through first to approximate the time and deleted something unnecessary.

Everything is ready, it is time to make video! I chose to record in my room because it provides a quiet and uninterrupted atmosphere. I tried different angles to make sure I was in the center of the lens while adjusting the lights. I recorded myself at the beginning and ending parts. Because I have already made two videos before, this time I was less nervous and reserved. I said some words like: “welcome”, “nice to see you again”, “thanks for watching” to close the distance with my audience. In addition, as for relate to the topic, I used a creative way of: “Oh, by the way, the device has just predicted that after watching this, you are welcome to give me a thumb up if you like it!” This made my video more relaxed and interesting. After finishing on-camera parts, I started to edit my video and collect all sources, then recorded audio. I started editing the images with license, followed by my video plan, put them into correct order. After that, I began recording the audio. I practiced the pronounce every time and listened to the pronounce which I was not sure. It was really difficult for me as an international student to make no pause and stammer, but I never give up, just tried and practiced more times to make a perfect one. In practice, I’ve found that the proximity of the mouth to the microphone is also a factor need to be pay attention, and if it’s too close, it creates noise. I spent all afternoon to finish this audio. What’s more, I edited some key words and texts into my video to give audience a better understanding. The last step was the combination of the music. I chose the same background music as previous videos so that to identify it is my channel.

The sources I used all licensed. Images picked from the Flickr and music from SoundCloud. In addition, I searched some academic articles and news which relate to my topic: Artificial Intelligence. Because it is an informative video and aims to educate viewers, I chose the material more carefully.

For this informative video task, I think the most difficult part is the content of your topic- how can you use materials to educate others, after watched my video what can you learn from it? Do you come up some new ideas of AI? Will you pay attention to this issue? If you say “YES!”, congratulate to myself, because that is my aim to this video. In order to achieve this target, I spend lots of time on the video plan. Immediately wrote down my new ideas through phone, laptop and paper that will not forget later.

I absolutely learned a lot through this video and the course of Making Video. I never think that I can make a video all by myself before! I learned how to edit with sources and film my self in a perfect angle shot. After three tasks, I am confident to face the camera and more skilled on making video. Thanks to myself for never give up and I am really proud of myself.

Through this unit, I not only learnt “learning from doing” and “learning never stops”, but also we need to “always be learning through social media.”

Learning never stop- Congratulation to myself!

Compared with the first self-introduction video, the second video I want to delve int hot topics in today’s society. We are now in an era of rapid development of science and technology, with the advent of virtual reality technology, our life becomes colorful and interesting. Then, in order to integrate virtual reality into our life, science and technology scholars developed augmented reality, which can better improve our social emotion and life quality. For example, the popular game of the moment: Pokémon Go- it has a lot of positive effects. I want to use this video to talk to you about new technologies and the endless benefits they bring and to provide some ideas on how to improve this technology in the future.

I chose new realities without hesitation, because I am very interested in this and it is also a topic that attracts social attention. It develops so fast that it is applied in various fields. First, I went deep into virtual reality by searching for some academic articles and read several documents which made me better understand its history and current situation. While searching this topic, I found a talk event of VR in this year Melbourne International Film Festival named “What is Virtual reality”. I participated without doubt. I learnt a lot about VR from its history and current trend also its future. After that, I started to think about my video framework and wrote down into Word document.image1I used different color markers to indicate whether this part is a recording or whether I need to insert text or pictures. Then I searched the Internet for some suitable photos, because there were many limitations in the selection of photos due to copyright concerns. I only selected one photo and music from the Internet and obtained copyright permission, and the other photos and video were all taken by myself. Although not very professional, but video angle is through my own ideas to shoot. Video editing is the most difficult task for me. I first studied the software which is relatively easy to edit. This blog of: “The 20 Best Video Editing Apps for 2019” that lists some popular video editing software, which I strongly recommend and share with you here. I downloaded the three mentioned above to compare which one is easier to edit and works best at the same time. Finally, I chose Videoleap, which is powerful. I put all the material in place by time, adding voice narration and text. This is not an easy task, I need to practice many times before there will be no pauses, probably every voice-over practice more than 10 times and finally choose a smooth own very satisfied with its sound quality.

I never thought that one day I could make a video all by myself from planning to editing. This is the first time and the challenges are many- I don’t know what video editing software to choose, how to edit, what content to put, how to convey to viewers and so on. I was really helpless and depressed. But only action can solve things. I encouraged myself to learn from the beginning step by step. Through learning and practice, I have mastered the basic video editing method, and I am extremely proud of myself and immediately share it with my family and friends, who are also proud of me.
– Little by little, a little becomes a lot!
